As Johor races ahead in the technological age, it is quickly becoming the hottest spot for data centres in Southeast Asia. This rapid growth is fueled by considerable infrastructure investment, drawing major players like Microsoft and Nvidia. With 47 planned and operational data centres, Johor is positioning itself as a key player in the online environment.

However, this boom raises crucial questions about job creation and talent retention. The Malaysian government actively promotes foreign investment in digital infrastructure, anticipating that this will drive employment and economic growth. Yet, there are concerns regarding the local talent environment. As more data centres emerge, the demand for skilled workers increases.

The rapid growth of data centres in Johor raises vital questions about job creation and retaining local talent.

The Johor Talent Development Council has stepped up to address these challenges, focusing on developing the workforce needed for this evolving sector. One of the initiatives launched is a data centre technician program aimed at filling around 200 job vacancies. It offers competitive salaries ranging from 3,500 to 4,000 ringgit (US$790-US$900), which is appealing for many.

However, the minimum qualification is a diploma, and some young individuals are commuting long distances for these opportunities. It’s exciting, but it also highlights the pressing need for local talent to keep pace with this rapid development. Emerging property hotspots indicate that other regions may also experience similar growth, which could impact Johor’s talent pool.

Despite the enthusiasm, there are potential pitfalls. Job creation in the data centre sector may be overestimated. The technical roles required might not be filled adequately, leading to a talent gap. Additionally, competition from neighbouring Singapore, with its lucrative pay, poses a risk of talent drain from Johor.

The sustainability of these job opportunities remains a concern.
